The Late Habit Cure

Back in the early winter of 1990 my roommate, Dave,
and I left our dorm for our first off-season strength training
workout.  We arrived at the stadium gym 4 minutes late.

Our strength coach, Joey Batson – stood talking to some
other players about 20 yards away -looked up when we walked in.

Joey was the person that I first learned some of
the exercises taught in the Super Body Blitz package.

He left my second year there to be Clemson’s
strength coach and still is to this day.
He is regarded as one of the nation’s
top strength and conditioning coaches in the NCAA.

One of my memories of Joey was that first day in the training facility.

Dave and I didnt think much of being late.

We walked over to the board where upperclassmen
were huddled making mental notes of what the
days workout entailed.

Dave and I began our workout.  We had played ball
together since CYO league in grade school.  We split and went to different
high schools and it so happened we united again in college.
So training together was like training with your brother.

As we were learning the “hang clean” exercise for the first time,
Joey, appeared out of nowhere.  Joey was a blonde, thick, strong man
with forearms like Popeye.  He said in a soft southern draw,
“You two, see me after your workouts.”

We looked at each other and thought, “Oh shittt.”

While finishing up we noticed Joey cracking
the whip with one player.  George Johnson was doing minute
sprints on the stationary cycle. He looked spent
peddling a 1 minute all-out then a 15 second coast. This for 45 minutes
straight over and over.  And this was following an intense weight workout.

Anyway, someone shared with us that George was late too.

Uhh, oh.

We wrapped up our workouts and walked towards Joey.
Once close, he said in calm cool voice, “We are going to run
you two a little extra for being late.  This usually cures the late
habit for newbies. I’ll give you two choices.
You can choose the stationary bike or the
stadium stairs.  Which will it be?”

We both agreed fresh air might be better. And since we witnessed
what George had been through, we chose the stairs.

Joey ran us ragged.  Our stadium had 113 steps all the way up.
He had us run up and down those 12 times.
We counted well over a thousand steps after a grueling weight workout.

Upon finishing Dave let out a little burp.

Walking back over the large soccer field to our dorms
Dave and I heaved our guts out.

And yes if you are wondering, we were never late to
any practice or drill ever again.

If you want people to be on time in your organization
or family — you have to implement the “Cure for the Late Habit.”

Time is a precious thing and can never be wasted.

Also, never let exercise be an excuse as to why you were late. It doesnt

Murder Mystery and Fitness

I did something different this past weekend.

I read a murder mystery novel.

Something I have never done before
and boy did I enjoy it.  Read it cover to cover
in less than a day I did!

I’m not sure I have ever done this before – ever.

After the hook was set into my lip from the opening story, I flipped pages
like a hot knife slicing through a block of butter.

I can even see myself becoming a murder mystery novel junkie.

But it started in the store when I said, “I’m not
into that kinda of reading.”  I singed the thought right at its root.

If I never stopped the thought, I would never have been exposed
to one talented author and his gripping work.

Anyway, this got me thinking… successful people
are rewarded for having an open mind.

An open mind that is open to possibilities and experiences
and yes, even results.

Sometimes I’ll hear from a friend, “if I dont play
football, will your program still work for me.”

To that I say the exercises that make football players fit and healthy
also work for other sports and martial artists and so on.

When you flow through life with a “lets explore mentality,”
your world instantly becomes more fruitful and fulfilling.

When you have an open mind, you may just uncover a
whole new style of training
to give you the results you’ve been looking for.

But if you are someone who has a belief system that
you get results only running long distance,
then my program is REALLY not for you.

In both of my fitness programs your workout
never lasts longer than 18-23 minutes tops.

And you can do it all without running more
than 15 yards max.

Want more clarity on what I’m talking about.

R u frustrated with NO results

Most people are frustrated once they start a program
after a few days and dont see the results they were expecting.

The majority give up.

Has this ever happened to you.

Question is …  are you making progress.

Most definitely.

Lets look at something seemingly unrelated for
guidance on the matter.

In order to build any skyscraper, you must first dig
deep into the earth for a solid, strong foundation.

Can you see any results above ground
while the cement and girders are settling in the sod
deep underground.


However, is this vital to the over all structure and well being of the building.

Heck yes.

Typically, you dont see any results when building a skyscraper until
a third of the way into the process.  Then the process seems
to go veery rapidly.

The same be true for any newbie starting a fitness plan.

No you dont see results right away. But thats okay, because the results
are coming and coming rapidly.

I know. I have coached several newbies on the path to fatloss.

Instead of focusing on the weigh scale. Focus on the activity scale.

Here is what I mean.

Dont get up every morning and jump on the scale.

Instead, when you are done with your exercise walk over
to your Linebacker Success charts and check off
that you exercised for the day.

Before long you’ll see your charts cluttered with check marks, notes, smiley faces,
X’s and so on. When you see your chart looking like this you will know you
are on the path to greatness.  And extreme fat loss.

Then after a couple weeks you can step up on the scale
and check out your personal meat numbers.

You’ll be thoroughly impressed – this I guarantee.

Dont give up when the needle on your scale doesnt budge…
Simply focus on the activity scale. You will feel much more at ease.

Then the results you originally intended will flow to you.
