Electricity is in the Air

There is a debate among
fitness gurus as to whether
working out by yourself or
with a group is better.

Here’s my take. Sit back and enjoy.

There are times when I workout
by myself.  However, if given the opportunity
to workout in the gym or with a partner, I opt for
the latter.

A new awakening and silver lining that came
out of a long, harsh winter and wet spring.
I spent much more time in the gym as a result.

Here is why working out around others provides a 30% better workout.

First though, a couple of stories.

Back on September 12, 1992 I had
the amazing pleasure fulfilling a childhood
dream of playing at the Horseshoe stadium
against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

There was a “small” crowd of 94,808
watching on.  Biggest in school’s history
up to that point.

People asked me afterwards what it
was like to play in front of skyscrapers
of screaming fans.

Electricity was in the air…foh show!

Move up on the timeline to my first
marathon in Chicago in 2004.

There were 1.5 million people in
the streets cheering us runners onto
victory.  This made 94,000 look like
bread crumbs scattered on the ground.

On top of that, there were 40,000 runners
all moving in one direction like a giant snake pulling you through the city
streets helping you reach the finish line.

How could this be. I guess you just have
to experience one for yourself to understand.
The positive reinforcing energy was real.

Again, electricity was in the air!

Now take the average gym.

There are other folks like yourself working
towards a common goal: to lose weight
and improve their health.

Yes, electricity is in the air!

I’d rather be in that environment to keep pushing you.
People of all shapes and sizes and age ranges… they
are there with you. To inspire you, motivate you, and pick you
up when you are having an off day.

I’ve always been a big team player kinda guy. Can ya tell?

Now, its not like I’m chatting up a storm with these
folks sucking their energy. I keep my “convoes” to a minimum.
However, just being around each other is like pulling clothes from
a dryer after tumbling for awhile, you feel a spark.

But this isnt static electricity, its dynamic electricity.

The other folks and you, while moving around,
exchange uplifting sparks the whole time you are there.
You probably didnt even realize it.

Now there is a time to be alone and meditate.

There is also a time to get after it (exercise) on your own.

If you are starting out or need a mental lift,
the place you need to be is around other fitness fanatics.

No excuses. Get moving. Your body will love you for it!

Ciao for now,

Vince Palko

Vicious Dog Attacks Me

Got a funny story for ya.

A couple days ago I went for a fast 3 miler on the tow path behind my house.

The sky was grey but I was on fire humping it the whole way.

YES, I implemented some tools from Triple Your Endurance
I was in the last stretch finishing up the last mile.
Closing in on  two younger woman with a yellow lab.

The dog was on a leash. As I approached the trio I swung out
wide to pass. I was digging hard… going about 9-11 mph.
And that’s cruising for 240lbs.

Apparently, not wide enough because the stout fifty-pounder
was looking for an afternoon snack.

As I was almost to the couples peripheral vision
when their dog turned around startled and lunged at me.
He wrapped his chompers around my thigh.

Luckily, all he got was cloth. He put two holes in
my Russell’s.

Keep in mind I am almost in a dead sprint.
The dog tries to take me down abruptly. My arms fly up
in the air like a tight rope walker balancing on a thin wire.

My momentum pulled my leg away from the dog in mid stride.
And withing a half a second was free back to my run.

After a quick falter I was back in step.

The owner screamed “Oh my gosh, Im so sorry!!”

I hollered over my shoulder… “Perfect balance. I didn’t even fall. No worries.”

As she continued to discipline her dog… I zipped off.

I got to thinking once my mind realized what had just happened.

How many slips do people have and end up
with broken legs, hips and wrists due to losing their balance.

I believe that the more your body is moving
and exercising the better the balance you attain.
Especially when you stretch and practice your balance
while exercising.

Practicing your balance could be the difference between
a clean slate and a host of medical bills.

Time to get after it. Rev that engine.

Best,

Vince Palko

Gratitude for What Is

Tagged along with the girls
to see Soul Surfer this past weekend.

Coming out of the movie I asked
my nine year-old, “What’s one thing you are grateful for?”

Her response, “…My arms!”

Now I am not spoiling the movie because
if you Google it, you’ll see what
Im talking about.

‘Twas a great example of an instant gratitude generator leaving the theater.

My daughter’s friend, who joined us, tried to snapping
her seat belt in the car afterwards with ONE arm.

Subtle realizations of enjoying the simple things
in life (like cutting fruit) and being grateful for what
you have NOW are huge life lessons.

So let me ask you a question:
If you had only one leg and were laid
up in the hospital what do you think
would be on your mind?

“If only I would have used my legs more
often and taken advantage of them
while I could.”

I think this would be a common feeling or response.
Dont you?

Shoot, just being laid up for long
periods of time makes one want to get up
and move her body.

Appreciation doesnt have to come
too late. It doesnt have to come once
something is lost.

You can begin today to appreciate
yourself and your body… by giving it what
it needs–exercise.

When you do this you will open up
yourself to great things.  You will be in
top 5% of our population that has
a healthy glow about them.

Go out and get after it.

Best,

Vince Palko

My Mom the Mouse

A couple weeks ago I had my family up
from Akron and the others over from Chicago
to the central meeting spot of Toledo.

Fun times were had by all.

Now you have to know something
about my mother.  And in knowing
can learn a lot about your health.

She is known as “The Mouse.”

During our get together something struck me.

The whole time here she nibbled.
She never had a full plate in front of her.

The same is true when she is at her home.
She’ll return from a day at work and nibble –
a slice of Swiss here, some mixed
nuts there and maybe a pretzel rod to top things off.

She never eats a ton — ever.
And she is as skinny as a light post in London’s square.

When I look at most people her
age they are twice her size if not
three times. Yet, she
does very little exercise.  Though
I would love to see her do more,
this works for her.

I wont reveal her age but is close to
the “retirement” years.

And it works for her. This is how
she has always been, even back to being a teenager.
I’d ask as she sat down to dinner,  “Mom, aren’t you gonna eat
with us?”

“No. I nibbled while I made it,” was her response.

Much can be gleaned from Mamma Palko.

What if you followed some of Mamma P’s
eating principles and nibbled throughout
the day instead of feeling like you MUST eat
at the socially acceptable times.

Would you feel lighter.

I can almost predict with 90% certainty  you would.

They say it takes about 20 minutes before
you can detect if you are full.  So slow down.

This will allow yourself to consume half
the food you typically do.

For me I like to eat.  And I also like
the movement — so I jack up the calories
to give me the fuel to get through
my Linebacker Fitness workouts.

And other endurance based routines like in
Triple Your Endurance.

So there you go.  Nibble your way to a thinner you.

Best,

Vince Palko

Live to Exercise – Exercise to Live Mentality

Funny how things have changed.

Do you ever recall hating something
in the past? I mean something that was really
a thorn in your side and now absolutely loving it?

I remember growing up as a young lad in college going
through off season conditioning at Eppler Center in
Bowling Green.

5:30 am — baby.  Practice started at 6am.
By about 6:30 most were heaving their
fruit loops and morning snacks into large
trash cans placed strategically throughout
the dusty old basketball gymnasium.

Once morning conditioning wrapped up,
you’d trudge out into the newly fallen snow
to shower and get ready for the day.

Meanwhile, 99% of campus is tucked snuggly
in their warm cozy beds.

I remember thinking man, it would be
great to be them for a day.

Those were the days when I lived on someone
elses watch and time because I HAD to.

HAVING TO exercise is one thing.

WANTING TO is another.

Yes, the transition has taken a while
to come to fruition.  However, there is
nothing like starting the day EARLY
and moving your body to beat of a iPod drum.

Many wonderful things happen.

What if you could take any horrible
situation and make it better with exercise.

What if you could transform the way you look
almost overnight.

Its possible.

What if you could never feel an ounce
of stress even in the thickest, nastiest
cloud of adversity?

Its possible.

When you burn off the stress of life
and replace it with all the chemicals
the brain releases with exercise you
are in a much better place to enjoy your life.

The answer is simple my friend.

All it takes is about two weeks straight of
setting a goal to get up a half hour
earlier to get the job done.

And if you think you cant because
of one excuse or another think again.

Part of my inspiration for developing a
consistent routine is my Uncle Vince.

He had a massive heart attack last year.
Despite the fact of having been
“opened up,” he consistently and regularly schedules
life around his workouts not the opposite.

“Did you see the big game last night, V?” I asked him the other day.

“I only watched the first half… COMMITMENT!”
was his text response.

That one hit me pretty good
and its a testimonial to how Vince wants to
never have the feeling like he is living
his last day again!

The good news for you is you dont have to
wait until it gets to that point.

By simply starting small increments of time–
then building on your successes
you can string together a week, two weeks,
a month and you will be on a roll.

to aid in your fitness revolution program,

Me, the Clutter-holic

Okay, I admit it… Im a clutter-holic.

Admission is the first step, right?
And I have already begun the process
of cleaning my clutter in my house.

IDEA GUY’S like myself seem
to have stacks of paper to the ceiling.
So clutter and me go hand in hand. :~)

How about you?

Funny part is I never knew I was
a Clutter-holic until
I was introduced to my friend
and client named Jeff.

He is on a mission to save the planet
from clutter. One of his ways to help people
is by writing a book on the harmful effects
of clutter on your well being.

Of course along the way, we developed a
character called, Clutterman seen here:
AdToons Book Covers.

Here is a guy who is thinking cleverly
and will surpass his competition because of it.

What other junk removal businesses
owners have authored a book? My guess
is none.  My guess is no one has
the drive such as Jeff, AKA Clutterman,
to make peoples lives
better… from the instant relief of a clutter-free dwelling.

So why did I write this note?

Simple…if you struggle with clutter
let us know about it.

If you want to transform your life
for the better and read this great book,
let me know.

I will put you on the waiting list
once the book comes out.

Secondly, if you too want to become
known as an expert in your niche
for the services you provide by writing
a book… let me know that as well.

I have helped others create their
first book as well as illustrate key messages
and make the content lively and fun!

To see some of the many book
illustration samples, click here:
AdToons Book Illustrations

I look forward to hearing from you
and how you have started the process
to become JUNK and CLUTTER FREE.

By the way, it sure feels wonderful becoming
CLutter FREE, baby!  So much new positive energy
in my workspace and house!

Ahhh, thanks Clutterman!

Best,

Vince Palko

Expect the Worst– REALLY?

‘Twas sitting with a friend at breakfast
one morning the other day minding my own bid-ness.
Well, not totally minding my own beez-wax.
But I could not help myself.

The table of guys behind me
were laughing and carrying on
with the waitress.

Not sure how they got on the topic
but…

The lead dog spoke up,
“I always expect the worst and
then when something goes right,
I’m glad for it.”

“Mr. breath of fresh air” continued,
“Its just that those things that go right
dont come as often as I like. But Im not
pissed because my expectations are low.
So it works for me.”

Then the table rumbled with chuckles.

Hmmm. Interesting.

Sad truth is I believe this guy is not alone.
There are many people who share
this belief.

Cept’ people these days seem to
be in a world of hurt. And adopt the attitude above.
Or so it seems.

When things seem most bleak, is just the very
moment things change for you. If and a BIG if
you can hold the images of what you want
to have happen in your life.

Expecting the worst gives you the worst.

Expecting the best sets up a vibration
that attracts what you expect from the universe.

But it cant be a “sometimes feeling”. It has to
be an “all the time feeling.”

I coach my clients on the fact that its
the images you hold in your mind determine
how your life turns out.

The exciting news is I am in the process of wrapping up a new
book that explores this in more depths.

You can see a slice of the new teaser trailer for it here,
Visual Affirmations.

Until then, keep the images you hold
in your mind on only what you want…

And expect the BEST.  You deserve it!

Ciao for now,

Vince Palko

The Green River Run

So the kids and I are off to Chicago, Chicago…
and yes, I will be singing my favorite rendition
of Ole Blue Eyes the whole way there.

Now, talk about a crazy place this time of the
year. Last time I was there around St Patty’s Day
I was rubber necking every few blocks — not because
of the pretty woman– although that would be a good
reason to turn my head,
but because people are coming out of the bars
at 9am. All those crazy Irish men and women
having fun– amazing.

Even though its not until next weekend these
Lushful folks get started now. And Im wondering
if the river will already be green.

But you wont find me doing that kind of stuff…
cause we will be celebrating a whole ‘nother kind
of party… its birthday time for my niece.

Anyway, the reason for my note is if you are going
to be a FAT Waging Warrior– you must plan ahead
to make sure you get your fitness time in.

So Sat. morning come heck or high water,
my “bro” and I will be running out to Lake Shore
and back for male bonding and fitness time.

If you want to keep the fat off, keep fitness
a top priority.. even while out of your “element.”

Yes. If you are wondering…
I will be applying my Triple Your Endurance program
to my routine… which is good for at least 15%
more fat burn when done properly.

So enjoy your weekend and preschedule NOW
what you will do to make yourself thinner and healthier.

All the Best,

Vince Palko
